At the rearguard.

After the end of the battle on 22 August 1944, after having liquidated the pocket in which there were about 80,000 Germans and heaps of corpses, the division withdrew to the rearguard for a well-deserved rest, to fill the gaps in men, equipment and weapons.
C.K.M. Squadron is located in the district of the 3rd Infantry Brigade, in the area of the village of Grandmesnil among orchards and some farms.
On 23 August we are at rest. The weather is fine.
The first additional personnel arrived, consisting of an officer (Lieutenant Jankowski Mieczysław, taking over the command of the 1st C.K.M. platoon replacing Sergeant Boryna¹) and 9 privates joined us, four of whom were veterans of the C.K.M. squadron and the other five, prisoners of war captured here in Normandy.
About German army, it is composed, especially in the infantry, of different nationalities. There are many Poles from the western provinces, but also from central Poland. There are a lot of Russians, Kalmyks, Mongols, Turkmen, Kirghiz and God knows what other nationalities.
