As we loaded, travelled and landed we saw one thing: The might of the British Empire, of the Allied generally, and the childish weakness of Germany.
There was no air raid on our convoy, no disturbance from the sea, and off the shores of France the ships ran and stood as if on review.
However, somewhere near the shores of France, during the last day of the journey, the sound of gunfire came from the sea.
We were escorted by warships, which chased around our convoy like hounds. The unloading was difficult and tedious. Pulling heavy vehicles onto barges is a very tedious affair.
In addition, the sea was turbulent. A large wave was jerking not only the small flat-bottomed barge but also the large ship.
At 12h30 on July 21 , we were with the first barge on the beach at Courseulles sur Mer2, 20 km east of Bayeux.
