Kazimierz Duda C.K.M. Band of Brothers CHRONICLES DOCUMENTS

Several major exercises were organised within brigades, divisions and with the French division1. The exercises were organised by the Polish command except for one called "Cartel", prepared by the British command.

Invasion of France.

On 6 June 1944, we learned, first from German and then from Allied announcements, about the first Allied bombing raids on Normandy. Everyone was waiting with nervous tension for the reports from General Eisenhower's headquarters. Everyone had one fear: that the invasion would not be as successful as the one at Dieppe. However, when the Allied advance became unquestionable and strong, it was clear that the time would come for us to land on French soil as well. We belong to the 21st Army Group, which launched the invasion.
We have signs on all our vehicles: big white five-pointed stars for aerial reconnaissance2.

1 General Leclerc's Second Armoured Division.
2This symbol was used to avoid being strafed or bombed by Allied aircraft. We will see later that this was not enough. The 1st Polish Armoured Division fell victim to three Allied bombing raids (friendly fire).
