Kazimierz Duda C.K.M. Band of Brothers CHRONICLES DOCUMENTS

This situation created all sorts of misunderstandings and bitterness among the veterans.
So much so that platoon commanders were asking for them to be sent away because these soldiers were only 'demoralising and undermining the morale of others'.
Add to this their lack of knowledge of the weapons and their lack of respect for commanders and colleagues, and one can get an idea of the real value of these new recruits.
There is no doubt that some of them did an excellent job - brave and collegial, conscientious and hard-working, but these were exceptions in a negligible percentage.
In training or during free time, it is mainly up to us to transform the mentality of these men in order to make them true soldiers of the 1st Armoured Division, such as those who have left us.
However, it must be said that this objective was never achieved. There was not enough time, although, as the saying goes, 'war years count double'.
