Kazimierz Duda C.K.M. Band of Brothers CHRONICLES DOCUMENTS

This part of the Netherlands is flat and low altitude. Crisscrossed by numerous canals of varying widths, it made infantry advance very difficult and the use of armour weapons downright impossible. To make matters worse, whole fields were flooded, and it was possible to advance on dikes far outside, which usually had very good roads leading to them. It was on such a dyke that a tank squadron, 'at the back of the pack', was destroyed. It seems that if the Germans had made up their minds to hold this position, they might have succeeded. It is impossible to leave a dyke without the risk of drowning. At every moment an infantryman had to be careful not to become a 'sailor'! After crossing the Mark Canal, the troops advanced rapidly towards Moerdyk. This town was the last defence of the Germans. They hurriedly embarked on rafts and small boats. Air support armed with rockets was relentless.
