The decisive moment during the fighting in South Brabant was the breaking of the enemy resistance at Alphen.
The fighting here lasted from 4 October to 27 October. They were positional battles, varied with advances on both sides. In addition, the artillery on both sides was constantly active. Our losses were quite heavy, as, it must be admitted, the Germans shoot well. Life in the front line in the trenches is pretty miserable and tiring.
Bad weather nearly all the time. The gun trenches and heavy weapons positions were flooded. The men were constantly wet and cold. Many had to be relieved as they were sick with flu and colds.
In the rearguard it was already better, but even here the enemy's artillery did not stop. They fired constantly and accurately. From time to time it hit a house where soldiers were quartered. The enemy wounds and kills.
