The worst moment was when the unit was relieved, when the heavy weapons had to be taken out of their positions and relief platoons were brought in to replace them. Then the Krauts opened hellfire..
After three weeks, the village, which had been clean and well laid out, became a battlefield. Every day we found new houses recently destroyed. And as the civilian population had suffered heavy losses, it was decided to evacuate them, leaving them to the mercy and disfavour of their living and dead possessions.
Unfortunately, regarding the negative achievements of our army, it should be mentioned that the town was looted in a criminal manner and the stolen goods were sent to the black market in Belgium.
In addition, all the chickens, piglets and calves were slaughtered, under the pretext that they would have died anyway because there was no one to feed them. This was also true!
On 27 October the German resistance collapsed and the Division resumed its advance in pursuit of the rapidly withdrawing enemy.
