Our artillery supports the infantry assault with precise fire on the Quesnay forest. That evening, the forest was conquered without a single shot being fired, as the whole area is now rubble. A lot of corpses, an incredible stench. The forest should be burned to prevent an epidemic.
The enemy's defence having broken down in this sector, the battalions were ordered to advance on the right of the Caen-Falaise line and to occupy this locality. We are moving forward without much effort.
The scouts have arrived at the borders of the town of Falaise.
There is constant talk of a connection with the Americans, who are somehow nowhere to be seen. The pocket in which we are going to trap the Germans is slowly closing.
On the evening of the 15th, the division was transferred to the left wing of the Corps¹, much to our regret. The redeployment went smoothly. At night we crossed the river Laizon in the vicinity of the town of Sassy.
On 17 August the Division crossed the Dive at the village of Jort, on the bridge built by the engineers to replace the one the Germans had blown up.
The German air force bombed us after lighting us up with flares. I suffered partial and temporary paralysis of my legs from the explosion.
